How to get more Google reviews (without feeling awkward about it)

Ask a local business owner what’s holding back their enquiries and few will say “reviews”. But to a customer choosing between you and the next name on the list, reviews are often the deciding vote — proof from real people that you’re worth calling. They also feed straight into how high you show up in local search. More good reviews genuinely means more work.

The good news: getting them is far easier than most people think. We helped one plumber go from no reviews at all to 390 five-star ratings — not with any trick, just by making it simple and asking properly. Here’s how.

Just ask

Most happy customers are glad to leave a review. They just never think to, and you never think to ask. That’s the whole gap. Get into the habit of asking every satisfied customer, every time — it’s the single biggest thing you can do.

Make it one tap

Nobody’s going to hunt through Google to find you. Send them a direct link that opens straight to the review box — Google gives every business one. Drop it in a follow-up text or email, or print it as a QR code on your invoice or van. The less effort it takes, the more reviews you’ll get.

Ask at the right moment

Timing does most of the work. The best time is right after you’ve finished a job and the customer’s visibly happy — “really glad you’re pleased; it genuinely helps us if you’d leave a quick Google review” lands far better then than a week later.

Reply to every one

Thank the good ones and answer the difficult ones calmly and professionally. It shows anyone reading that there’s a real business that cares behind the name — and Google notices the activity too.

Never buy or fake them

Fake reviews get spotted, get removed, and can get your listing penalised. They also read as fake to customers, which does more harm than having fewer. Real reviews from real jobs are the only ones worth having.

Do this consistently and the reviews stack up on their own — and they keep working for you long after the job’s done. If setting up the link, the QR code and the follow-ups sounds like one more thing you haven’t got time for, it’s exactly the sort of thing we handle for the businesses we look after.
