Your Google Business Profile matters more than your website

When someone nearby searches for what you do — “plumber near me”, “roofer in Beckenham” — the first thing Google shows isn’t a list of websites. It’s a little map with three businesses pinned on it. That’s the map pack, and for most local searches it sits above everything else on the page.

Those three listings come from Google Business Profiles, not websites. Which means your free Google listing is often the very first impression a customer gets of your business — and it has a “Call” button right there, before they’ve visited your site at all. Get it right and you’re one tap from a new job. Leave it half-finished, like most businesses do, and you’re handing that call to whoever set theirs up properly.

Claim it and fill in everything

An empty or half-filled profile is a wasted one. Make sure your name, address, phone number, opening hours, website and the exact services you offer are all there and correct — and that they match what’s on your website word for word. Google trusts businesses whose details line up everywhere.

Add real photos, and keep adding them

Profiles with photos get more clicks and calls than ones without. You don’t need a photographer — genuine photos of your work, your van, your team and finished jobs do more than any stock image. Add a few new ones every month so the profile looks alive.

Turn on messaging and keep your hours honest

If people can message you straight from the listing, some will — that’s a lead you’d otherwise never hear from. And nothing loses trust faster than turning up to a “closed” that Google said was open, so keep your hours accurate, bank holidays included.

Reply to every review

Reviews are a huge part of what decides who gets picked — and replying to them, even with a quick thank you, signals to both customers and Google that there’s a real, attentive business behind the listing.

None of this costs a penny. It’s one of the highest-return hours a local business owner can spend — which is exactly why it’s the first thing we sort for the businesses we work with.
